Post-Operative Care for Carotid Endarterectomy  

After you leave the hospital, it is natural to feel tired and sore for the first few weeks. It is normal to feel hoarse for several weeks. Observe your incision dailly, and report and signs of infection to 512-459-8753.

Signs of Infection

  • Redness
  • Increased pain
  • Temperature above 101 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Unusual drainage or swelling

Incision
Wash incision daily with soap and water. Do not apply salve, ointment, Betadine, or anything to the incision unless directed by the physician. Inform your physician if you notice any of the following signs:

  • Loss of movement of one of your extremities
  • Loss of sight
  • Slurred speech
  • Numbness or tingling in your extremities
  • Difficulty swallowing

Activities

  • Do not lift objects heavier than 5 pounds for 1 week
  • You may ride in a car. If you go more than 100 miles, you will need to sop occasionally and walk around briefly
  • Avoid any sudden or extreme neck movement, but exercise your neck by bending your head slowly in all directions. Try to use your neck normally.
  • You may do light housework
  • You may climb steps slowly

Sex
You may resume sexual relations 2 weeks after surgery
